FIGHTING

CANCER

TOGETHER

The Y and LIVESTRONG joined together to create LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.

Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to achieve their goals, such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem.

In addition to physical benefits, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the emotional well-being of survivors and their families by providing a supportive community where people impacted by cancer can connect during treatment and beyond.

Program Goals

To help adult cancer survivors build muscle mass and strength, increase flexibility and endurance, improve overall functional ability and reduce the severity of therapy side effects, prevent unwanted weight gain and improve energy levels and self-esteem.

Instructors

Certified fitness instructors specially trained by the YMCA give participants personalized instruction. The instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, modifying exercises to your fitness level and offering a supportive environment.

Stronger Together

·         Participants must have a strong personal desire to join the program and must commit to attending all classes.

·         Participants must consult with their physician before beginning the program.

·         Participants must complete YMCA screening forms. The program is designed for adults who have recently completed their cancer treatment.

·         Enrollment decisions will be made individually.

Comprehensive Support

Other YMCA cancer survivor programs include:

·         Family Prime Time Plus — Supervised fun for the children of cancer survivors while their parents attend support groups or medical appointments.

·         Restorative Yoga — Teaches cancer survivors techniques to ease the body and mind.

·         Laurie’s Hope — Support program that helps breast cancer survivors maintain health and well-being through their cancer-survivor journey.

The YMCA of Greater Syracuse thanks the American Cancer Society for its support of our cancer survivor programs.

Cancer and Exercise

A growing body of research, including studies by the National Cancer Institute, confirms that exercise offers tremendous benefits to cancer patients. Physical activity may reduce the risk of cancer recurrence and increase survivorship.

Exercise can help cancer survivors:

·         Reduce fatigue

·         Improve muscle strength

·         Improve energy levels

·         Improve balance

·         Increase flexibility and endurance

·         Enhance confidence and self-esteem

·         Improve mood and overall well-being
